Dat de samenwerking met producer T Bone Burnett Elton John goed bevalt mag duidelijk zijn. Na The Union, zijn samenwerkingsalbum met Leon Russell, uit 2010, vroeg hij Burnett om ook zijn daarop volgende soloalbum The Diving Board te produceren. Het bleek een gouden keus.
