Het leven in de Laurel Canyon, het culturele hart van in Los Angeles in de late jaren zestig en de jaren zeventig, inspireerde Joni Mitchell tot de titel van haar derde album. Met songs die een grote muzikale groei lieten horen werd Ladies of the Canyon haar eerste meesterwerk. Schijnbaar moeiteloos muzikaal doorgroeiend sloot haar derde album naadloos aan op het een jaar eerder verschenen Clouds maar de uitwerking van de songs was nog sterker, zocht ze nog meer muzikaal avontuur in zowel de songs als de arrangementen en was haar stem nog overweldigender.
