De bliksem kan niet altijd op dezelfde plek inslaan. Father John Misty wist echter met de fraaie draaikolk van emoties die I Love You, Honeybear (2015) is en de inktzwarte maatschappijspiegel Pure Comedy (2017) wel bijna tweemaal dezelfde plek te treffen. Wellicht scheppen die twee voltreffers (te) hoge verwachtingen voor God’s Favorite Customer. Is het een derde voltreffer? Het lastige bij Father John Misty, het alter-ego van Josh Tillman, is echter dat je nooit weet waar je nou precies aan toe bent. De dubbele bodems, het cynisme en de overkoepelende concepten maakten de respectievelijk tweede en derde Father John Misty-platen soms wellicht wat topzwaar, maar immer fascinerend.
