Evenals op de voorgangers profileert Mary Gauthier zich als een eigentijds troubadour die in haar autobiografische verhalen, de  donkere pijnlijkste momenten in een  bestaan vol ellende geenszins uit de weg gaat. In een niet aflatende zoektocht naar haar identiteit verwerkt ze die herinneringen in emotioneel geladen diep snijdend songwerk in een verfijnd country-noir idioom.
