De muzikale loopbaan van Ed Kuepper begint begin jaren 70 bij de Australische punkband The Saints die al vrij vroeg naamsbekendheid opbouwen met album en titeltrack (I'm Stranded). Kuepper is al jaren niet meer actief bij de band, en start daarna The Aints op. De naam is afgeleid van een versleten drumvel, waar de S door veelvuldig gebruik niet meer zichtbaar is. Natuurlijk is dit een sneer naar oud teammaatje Chris Bailey, die als frontman nog steeds actief is bij The Saints, al klinken die tegenwoordig meer blues gericht, met in het verleden ook uitspattingen richting de folk.
