De excentrieke Amanda Palmer maakt naam met het cabareteske The Dresden Dolls duo. Met haar muzikale partner Brian Viglione presenteren ze zichzelf als zelfkant mimespelers, ergens tussen Franse dramatiek en uitgerangeerde zwervers in. Met Coin-Operated Boy scoren ze een klein hitsucces, ma drie albums scheiden de wegen. Amanda gaat alleen verder, met shockerende presentatie en provocerende teksten. Het is haar niet vreemd om naakt op het podium te verschijnen, maar eigenlijk heeft ze dit niet nodig. Op haar eerste albums is ze lastig te plaatsen.
