Nadat John Darnielle met het zeer sterke In League with Dragons zijn ziel al een stukje meer publiekelijk openstelt, kan het bijna niet anders dat de volgende plaat van The Mountain Goats nog indringender en duisterder klinkt. Als hij in maart de studio instapt beheerst COVID-19 en Black Lives Matters het wereldbeeld nog niet, en met de pre-coronaplaat Getting Into Knives laten ze voornamelijk een verzachtende kant, maar wel verbaal messcherpe van zichzelf horen. Een zeer productieve maand, in dezelfde periode is er aan Songs for Pierre Chuvin gewerkt, die in april al zijn plek op de markt vindt.
