Van een verrassing gesproken. 10 jaar na hun split is daar ineens toch opnieuw een The Mars Volta-album. Het ziet er met zijn vlakke gouden artwork al helemaal niet uit als een vroegere The Mars Volta. Maar het klinkt effenaf fantastisch. Er is nog een bijkomende maar: wat je krijgt is een qua toegankelijkheid ongelooflijk radicale stijlbreuk met alles wat ooit aan dit nu ook simpelweg titelloze album voorafging. "Dacht je, aldus Cedric Bixler-Zavala en Omar Rodriguez-López zelf, we zijn beiden zevenenveertig, dat we onze oude shit gewoon verder gingen meesleuren als een te klein geworden oud t-shirt uit onze jonge jaren?" Wat hier nu uit onze speakers komt is...
